Seriously, this experience of participating in the BC’s Best Young Designer competition has been a blast. Not only has it allowed me a huge creative outlet, designing a suite with free reign – but also a creative challenge, putting my sourcing abilities and eye for treasures to the test with a carefully monitored budget. The press and media coverage that has resulted from suite 451 and the competition as a whole has provided me with much appreciated exposure and encouragement, for which I am extremely grateful. This latest feature was seen in the current issue of Home Decor & Renovations and offers a little insight into each designer as well as our corresponding suites.

It is with gratitude that I share yet another article featuring Suite 451! It has been both rewarding and flattering to receive the positive feedback on this unit – I had so much fun creating the space and it is super exciting to know that others are enjoying viewing it as much as I did putting it together. This feature is in the current New Home Guide, kindly presented by Susan Boyce.

Brand new dark wood dinning set, with custom upholstered seats in a glamorous silvery tan that adds some sparkle and ties into the couch and chair in the living room perfectly. I used the same fabric on the headboard in the bedroom that i built.

It reminded me of jelly fish – which i find fascinating, and champagne bubbles…and we all like a lil’ bubbly, right?

One thing I’ve learned in this business is that having an incredible photographer on your side is equally important as any other trait a designer can have… lucky for me, the super talented (and totally lovely) Melissa Gidney of MG Images is not only a beautiful spirit and great friend – she also made the trek out to my display suite at Morgan Crossing in South Surrey this week to photograph the space. Melissa captured some fabulous shots of the suite, as well as the little details – check out the pictures and let me know what you think! If you are in and around the White Rock area between now and February 20th, head over to the suites (there are 6 in total as part of the BC’s Best Young Designer competition) and see what all the designers have been up to; voting for your favourite (umm, suite 451 please!) takes place at the Morgan Crossing Presentation/ Sales Centre, which is extra conveniently just steps away from our new fave spot for java, Mink Chocolates & Coffee!

I would be remiss if I didn’t give a huge shout out to those that helped me create this space – without the special finds and custom pieces, this suite would definitely not be what it is. Custom drapery fabric in each room was provided by Aftex Products; the painting and wallpapering was professionally installed/ completed by Perfect Line Painting & Construction; the large, hanging wooden display piece in the living room was custom created by JP Timbers; my inspiration piece (the fabulous orange lamp in the living room) as well as other lighting and some stellar display books were found at Space Lab (1847 Main Street, Vancouver – Main + 3rd); extra awesome treasures were found, as always, at ReFind, which is located directly next door to Space Lab; Attic Treasures on Commercial Drive was the spot where I found the super cool bedside table lamps and the stunning bedspread in the Master; other retailers that helped complete this suite were: Vancouver Special, Paboom, The Cross Decor & Design and Nood.

When running out of ideas for art, why not stretch your favorite fabric over a canvas. It is inexpensive and can be changed out very easily.

Moooi Inspired

When on a tight budget and wanting to achieve a designer look why not make it yourself? This lamp was inspired by one of my Favorite lighting companies called Moooi. The designer is Marcel Wanders who created this lamp in 1989. It retails for over $2000 and I made it for just over $100 by asking a representative at my local hardware store the best plan of action on how to “do it yourself”.

When on a budget and need a quick and do it your self piece of art these wood canvas’s from Opus Art Supplies add warmth to any room. Splattering on extra paint from the feature wall add a playful edge and ties the room together.
